Overview of the Four-Stage Course
Stage 1: Foundations of Creative Writing
In this stage, students are introduced to the key elements of fiction and poetry writing. This foundational phase focuses on developing essential skills such as point of view, characterization, dialogue, plotting, and description. Engaging exercises will help students strengthen their vocabulary and learn to craft well-structured sentences. The emphasis on a mentor-student relationship allows instructors to provide feedback and guidance, ensuring young writers build confidence as they begin their creative journey.
Stage 2: Advancing Writing Skills
The second stage challenges students to deepen their understanding of fiction and poetry. They engage in advanced exercises that focus on complex characters, detailed settings, and intricate plot development. At this point, students begin to experiment with their unique writing styles while still benefiting from structured guidance. This stage encourages greater independence, allowing writers to take creative risks and further hone their storytelling and poetic skills.
Stage 3: Mastering Creative Techniques
In the third stage, students master key tools of creative writing by working on longer, more sophisticated pieces. They refine their ability to weave together plot, dialogue, and setting, while also exploring advanced poetic techniques like rhyme, meter, and line structure. Exercises build upon one another, enabling students to complete full-length creative works. This stage solidifies foundational techniques, preparing students to produce more polished and engaging writing.
Stage 4: Becoming a Proficient Writer
In the final stage, students transition from learning the craft to practicing it as proficient writers. They focus on completing and refining their creative projects, whether fiction or poetry, while gaining practical knowledge about the writing process. This includes developing discipline, submitting work to publications, and navigating the challenges of rejection. By the end of this stage, students will be equipped with the skills and perseverance needed to pursue writing as both a passion and a profession.
