Writing: Unlocking the Writer Within Structure

This course’s nine structural models guide students step-by-step to master the art of organization. These models include:

1. Note Making and Outlines: Laying the foundation with detailed notes and clear outlines.

2. Writing from Notes: Transforming notes into coherent, polished writing.

3. Retelling Narrative Stories: Capturing the essence of stories with personal flair.

4. Summarizing a Reference: Distilling information into concise summaries.

5. Writing from Pictures: Sparking creativity through visual storytelling.

6. Summarizing Multiple References: Synthesizing diverse sources into a unified piece.

7. Inventive Writing: Encouraging original thought and creative expression.

8. Formal Essay Models: Crafting well-structured, compelling essays.

9. Formal Critique: Developing critical thinking through detailed analysis.

Style

With the stylistic techniques, students enhance their writing by incorporating:

Students progress from basic writing to a sophisticated style, building a robust vocabulary and mastering diverse sentence structures.

This writing course’s methods for teaching writing are akin to teaching music, art, or sports. Students start by analysing and imitating exemplary writing. Through incremental steps, they gradually develop the skills to craft their own original compositions.

Creative Writing

*Any additional texts or readings will be provided for the students on Blackboard.

Students will need to have an observation notebook. Any kind of portable, small notebook will do.

Course Description:

Creative Writing for the Logic Stage is a year-long course that meets once per week. We will be exploring different aspects and genres of creative writing through analysis of an assortment of readings and completing various writing exercises. Students will be exposed to the foundations of fiction and poetry. Creative Writing for the Logic Stage will cover the core elements of creative writing, and successful compositions in general.

Written Assignments:

Students will have at least two kinds of assignments each week: a reading assignment and a writing assignment.

Workshopping:

At certain times during the semester, students will be asked to share their work with their classmates during class. Our class is a safe space to share our creative writing. When commenting on another student’s work, please consider their feelings and how you would feel if you were receiving your own comments.
